Vaginal Candidiasis: what is it and how to fight it?

The vaginal infection caused by candida (fungus) is favored by some factors such as the use of antibiotics, corticoids, contraceptive pill, pregnancy, diabetes, too tight underwear, immersions in high chlorinated swimming pools, the use of pantiliners of synthetic fabric, and allergies to perfumes or local soaps called “intimate”.

It is a very common infection, a high number of women in the world suffer from it unfailingly along their lives. In fact, this fungus is always present in our skins and digestive tract, but it is controlled by other non-pathological microorganisms.

In the same way, they live in the vagina without necessarily infecting it.

In order for them to infect, the biological equilibrium has to be broken, allowing these usual inhabitants to become aggressive enough to infect the vagina. If this occurs, symptoms appear at the beginning many times as slight pains that start increasing later on. They are: ardor and itching in the vagina, white and dense flow as sour milk or yogurt, irritation and vulvar reddening. These pains become worse when menstruation comes closer and many times the interest in sex is lost since after the coitus the symptoms worsen.

The man usually suffers from pains like reddening, irritation and itching in the glans, and sometimes itching in the groins but most of the times it is a “healthy” holder who transmits the illness. That is to say that he doesn’t suffer the infection, for this reason it is advisable for him to go through the treatment in order to avoid the re contagion of his couple.

Having a stressful life, bad eating habits, the lack of time to relax in our daily life are factors that predispose and many times support vaginal mycosis.

If we suspect we are suffering from a vaginal infection caused by candida it is very important to go to the gynecologist, because there are other pathologies which can be confused with candidiasis, for example bacterial or viral infections or a lack of estrogens which provokes vaginal dryness.

The gynecological exam and cytology will define the diagnosis of the infection avoiding the worsening and prolongation of the symptoms.

In order to fight the fungus, first we have to accept the vagina is its habitual home and don’t attempt to expulse it but to turn it back to the condition of non-infecting inhabitant. To do so, the first and main thing to be done is to change the vaginal environment transforming the pH in alkaline.

To achieve that, there are creams and laboratory vaginal ovules with Clotrimazole or Ketoconazol as well as oral anti fungus, but it has been proved that to change the vaginal pH it is enough with washing the vagina with 1 litter of boiled mineral water and let it cool + 2 spoonfuls full of bicarbonate of sodium. This procedure is recommended once a day at night. Then, place some natural yoghurt and let it act the whole night for 14 days + abstinence + an anti fungus cream for the sexual partner, and the infection will be solved in most of the cases.

Needless to say, we have to pay attention to all the above mentioned reasons that favor the infection and try to modify them. They are, among others:

  • Reduce or eliminate the consumption of refined sugar and dairies

  • Reduce alcohol

  • Ingest more raw green food and integral grains

Phytotherapy can be of great help to reduce the symptoms of mycosis

  • Essential oil of marigold

  • Essential oil from the Tea Tree

  • Olive oil soap

The medical homeopathic treatment is often of great help in candidiasis specially if it is frequently repeated, as it is a holistic medicine and takes into account the whole person and their characteristics. It considers the emotional and physical aspects as well as the personal moment of the individual when the infection is reactivated. As it is an energetic medicine, its objective is to stimulate the defensive mechanisms of the body for it to react and start the self healing process.
